Cold Hands and Feet Remedies that Help to Keep You Warm!

“Freezing cold” hands and feet… what do you do about it? Well, here are simple cold hands and feet remedies that can help keep your extremities warm especially in this cold winter season!

Best Cold Hands and Feet RemediesI wrote a post on essential oils cold hands and feet a few weeks ago and was planning to write a follow up that includes other solutions for this problem later.

Then, a couple of days ago, someone asked the above question in one of the Facebook groups I’m a member of. And it was like a reminder to me that it’s time to write that follow up post!

Almost everyone suffers from cold hands and feet during the winter because of the extreme cold weather.

I was born and raised in a tropical country and this wasn’t an issue until I went to the UK (I currently live in the US).

I went to London (UK) in January – the peak of winter. So you can imagine my reaction when I stepped out of the airport and was greeted by the bitter cold winter wind.

It is important to note that there are also those who have cold hands and feet even during the summer because of health conditions such as Raynauds.

For these individuals winter makes the condition even worse… from cold to frozen hands and feet!

I am not addressing frostbite here.  That is a whole different situation.  One that can be very serious depending upon how long the extremities have been exposed to the severe cold elements, how much of the body is involved, etc.  911, 999, going to an emergency room, or contacting a physician may be warranted in these cases!

Also, if you think, or know, you have a medical problem (such as a circulation problem) that it causing cold hands and feet talk to your physician before trying these remedies!

Okay, enough with my ramblings and warnings! Here are some of the simple solutions for non frost bite cold hands and feet.

#1. Exercise/Physical Activities

Any physical activity will help keep you warm. This is because one of the reasons your hands or feet feel frozen is poor circulation. Physical activities help to increase blood flow, thus helping to warm up your body.

Get up and do jumping jacks. Too much sitting is not good for your circulation (and your health in general). If jumping jacks are too easy, then try burpees!

You will be surprised at how effective simple activities such as clenching and unclenching your fists can be in helping keep your hands warm.

#2. Very Warm Shower/Bath

According to one of my friends whose frozen hands and feet gets really bad, showering sometimes in really warm water gets her blood flow back and makes her feel better.

#3. Dishes

Do dishes in very warm water to help get blood flowing in your hands again and keep you warm. Or just put your hands in warm water and rub them together (again only if a non frost bite situation).

#4. Wool Gloves and Socks

Get yourself quality wool gloves and socks. Wool fabric does a great job in providing warmth and insulating you from cold.

#5. Warm Drinks

Drink something warm – coffee, tea or even soup. My favorite is ginger tea. Not only does the warm tea helpful, but ginger is also spicy and has anti-inflammatory properties that help with blood flow among other health benefits. As an added plus, your hands get warmed by the heat radiated through the mug (take care not to burn your hands though!)

#6. Hand Warmers

Hand warmers are great for instantly warming up your hands. You can put them in your gloves or pockets.

There are different types of hand warmers to choose from. You can choose the air activated hand warmers that provide natural heat. Or you can go for the rechargeable ones!

There are also toe warmers you can put in your boots… yes they may not be comfy to walk on but you’re warm!

#7. Rice Sock

Fill a tube sock about 2/3 with rice and with the open end tied into a knot to close it. Microwave for a few minutes, then put it in the foot end of your bed at night. You will love it!  Take care not to burn yourself when removing from the microwave and when using!

#8. Microwavable Pet Heating Pad

One of my friends swears by this microwavable pet heating pad. She puts it in the foot of her bed at night.

#9. Disposable Heat Packs

Disposable heat packs are one of the best cold hands and feet remedies. You can put them in your pockets for a quick hand warm especially when you are out!

#10. Feet Warming Carpet

Even if you have ice cold feet, you will surely find this feet warming carpet very helpful. Keep it under your desk while you work to help warm up your feet and toes!

You can also get this switch that sits on the desk and makes it much easier to turn it on and off and to switch from high to low temp.

  1. Rechargeable hand warmers sounds like a great idea for the cold winter months! Even here in sunny SA it can become very cold, especially in the mountains. Ginger tea is one of my favorite winter drinks.
