Easy Chocolate Mint Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap Recipe!

These adorable cupcakes are easy to make with melt and pour soap. They are scented with a natural fragrance oil called Mocha Mint. The unique soap mold makes them easy to make. They make a great gift for friends, teachers, or anyone who loves fun soap.

Making melt and pour soap is a fun hobby because you can get creative with ingredients and shapes. These cute Mocha Mint soap cupcakes look amazing, but they are easy enough for even a beginner to make.

You can make a soap icing by either using a whipped soap base or making a homemade recipe and piping it on top of the soap. It works well and looks really cute, but it doesn’t fully harden with either method.

This cupcake soap mold makes it easy because the icing on top is soap that you melt and pour into the mold.

Now the frosting looks perfect each time you use it, and you don’t have to have cake decorating supplies or skill to make this soap.

Ingredients for this Mocha Mint Cupcake Soap Recipe

These soap cupcakes look like an advanced DIY project, but they are very easy to make with just four ingredients.

Melt and Pour Soap

Melt and pour soap is premade soap that was already made with lye, so you don’t have to handle lye to make soap.

This makes it a great option for those who want to make soap as a hobby and don’t want to buy a lot of expensive ingredients to get started.

Melt and pour soap is also really fun to work with. You can add different colors, scents, and other additives to make a unique bar of soap.

Cocoa Powder

I added real cocoa powder to this mocha mint cupcake soap. Since it’s dry and doesn’t have water in it, the soap won’t get moldy.

Cocoa powder and other additives have a tendency to fall to the bottom of the mold when you use them in melt and pour soap. You can buy a suspension base, which keeps additives suspended better.

I don’t buy a suspension base. Instead, I add the cocoa powder and stir well. Then I let the soap cool slightly and pour it when it’s cooler.

This helps the soap set up sooner, so less falls to the bottom. Some cocoa powder will still fall, but this really does help it stay suspended better.

Mocha Mint Natural Fragrance Oil

I used a natural fragrance oil from Right Note called Mocha Mint. It was available in their Holiday Favorites set with 5 other natural fragrance oils. Sadly, I no longer see that it is readily available.  

The Right Note Mocha Mint was a combination of a natural chocolate fragrance oil and peppermint essential oil. It had a wonderful scent that smells just like a peppermint mocha with a strong chocolate scent and a nice mint to round it off.

So now what you ask?  Take out some essential oils and make your own blend!  Here are a couple of blends that you could use.  Blend them one drop at a time and you may come up with an even better fragrance just for you!

Blend # 1: 42 drops coffee EO, 28 drops peppermint EO, 14 drops cocoa absolute EO, 14 drops vanilla oleoresin, or vanilla botanical extract EO.

Blend #2: 42 drops peppermint EO, 28 drops cocoa absolute EO, 28 drops coffee EO.

One blend has more of a coffee-peppermint scent; while the other is more peppermint with a slightly less cocoa-coffee scent.  Have fun and mix your own blend.  I recommend you make your blend in a dropper type bottle so that it is ready and easy to use when the recipe calls for it.  You will use all 98 drops (close to 1 tsp measurement).

Mica

I use mica to color my soaps because it gives a more consistent color that doesn’t fade. You can safely use food coloring, but it will fade and become uneven.

So you may not want to use it for soaps that you plan to give as gifts. You can also use liquid soap colorants.

You’ll need about ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon of mica for each part, the tops and the bottoms. The cocoa powder also helps color the bottom.

Cupcake Mold

I love this cupcake mold because it makes these soaps so easy. Before I bought this mold, I had to make whipped soap and pipe it on.

Now I just melt the soap and pour it. It saves a lot of time, and my soaps look better because they all look the same.

If you are making these to sell, whipped soap is fragile, hard to package, and prone to getting squished. These cupcakes are sturdier and can also be shipped.

Tips for Working With Melt and Pour Soap

If you’re new to using melt and pour soap, it’s pretty easy to use. Here are some tips to help you use it safely.

Always heat melt and pour in a double boiler or in the microwave. Do not heat over direct heat.

Wear eye protection and gloves when working with soap and essential oils or fragrance oils.

Watch the soap carefully so it doesn’t boil. Soap that boils may get rubbery when it sets up. If there is a chunk of soap that just won’t melt, cut it in half, stir for a minute, and then use another microwave interval if needed.

After you pour your soap, spray the top of the mold with isopropyl alcohol to remove air bubbles. The alcohol evaporates and won’t affect your soap.

Don’t use more fragrance oil or essential oil than called for in the recipe. The Mocha Mint that I used is very strong, so you won’t need to add more or it will be overpowering.

DIY Chocolate Mint Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap Recipe

Ingredients

• 19 oz white melt and pour soap, divided (The one I used isn’t on Amazon, but this brand is good)
• 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon Mocha Mint natural fragrance oil, (or your own blend-see above),  divided
• Green and brown mica

Tools and Supplies

• Cupcake mold
• 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup
• Spoons
• Knife
• Measuring spoons
• Spray bottle with rubbing alcohol

Directions

Cut 8 ounces of white melt and pour soap into 1 inch cubes. Microwave on high in 30 second intervals until melted. Stir between each interval.

When it’s completely melted, add ½ teaspoon Mocha Mint natural fragrance oil and green mica until you reach the desired color. Stir well.

Pour slowly into the icing part of the cupcake mold. Spray with rubbing alcohol to pop any air bubbles on the surface.

Cut 10 ounces of white soap and repeat the process to heat it until melted.

Add cocoa powder slowly and then add the brown mica and ½ teaspoon Mocha Mint natural fragrance oil.

Let the soap cool until it forms a skin on top. Stir well to melt the skin and pour into the cupcake bottoms in the mold.

Let the tops and bottoms cool completely before removing them from the mold.

Use a knife to score the soap where you will attach it.

Melt 1 ounce of melt and pour soap and use a spoon to spoon it on top of the cupcake bottoms and set the icing tops and press down firmly. Let sit until the soap hardens.

Now you have cute Mocha Mint soap cupcakes! Each soap is approximately 4.5 ounces of soap.
